CANSail Program

Before registering, please read this information about the CAN Sail programming being introduced in 2012.

In 2012 the Canadian Yachting Association is launching CAN Sail . CAN Sail refers to Canada 's updated sailor training standards and will replace the traditional ‘White Sail' & ‘Bronze Sail' levels.

The CAN Sail dinghy programming was developed under the framework of Long Term Sailor Development, and has been designed with the sailor's age and developmental stage in mind. CAN Sail programming is designed to be a set of progressive Learn-to-Sail standards focused on providing sailors with a solid foundation of core skills. The CAN Sail system allows sailors to learn and progress in any type of boat and consolidate key skills before adding more complex skills.

The Kingston Yacht Club is proud to be one of the clubs delivering the CAN Sail program in 2012. The CAN Sail program will be delivered in the same format that the KYC Junior Sailing program as been over the last number of years and will not effect the session lengths. Young sailors will enter the CAN Sail program based on their past sailing achievements and progress through the CAN Sail standards moving forward. Instructors will be trained in the CAN Sail program and will continue to strive to deliver the highest level of instruction.

We look forward to another great year of sailing at the KYC Junior Sailing program as we introduce CAN Sail !

If you have any questions specific to the CAN Sail programming at KYC, please email lts@kingstonyachtclub.com .

Wet Feet Program

KYC is excited to introduce a new program targeted at kids from age 5 to 8 years old. This is a program specifically to get kids involved in boats, the water and sailing. The primary focus is on fun and feeling comfortable on the water and in boats. They will learn the basics of safety, and how to move around and balance in boats, all while having loads of fun.

Minimum Requirements: This program is for kids age 5 to 8 years old who have little or no sailing experience. The kids should have a lifejacket that fits well, and the rest is up to our instructors!

Course Material: We have instructors who have been specifically trained in delivering this program to kids of this age. Techniques and activities are specifically targeted at this age group and safety and fun are the primary goals.

Safety, moving and balancing in boats, and the basics of sailing are all covered.

2012 Schedule:
Enrolment is limited in this program.
The program runs on Thursday OR Thursday evenings from July 3rd to August 23rd from 5pm to 7pm.

Opti Program

This program is targeted at younger and smaller sailors by utilizing boats that are perfectly suited to their smaller size (Oppies and Optimists).

Requirements: Applicants must be at least 7 years old.

  • Opti Beginner introduces young children of a minimum age of 7 to the sport of sailing in “Oppies”. Two sailors in each boat work together to learn the basics of steering, sail trim and parts of the boat. The maximum recommended weight for this program is 100 pounds, otherwise entry into CANSail 1 & 2 is recommended. Children should be comfortable swimming in deep water.
  • Opti Intermediate allows sailors to expand upon their basic sailing skills. The Opti Beginner program is a pre-requisite for entry into Opti Intermediate. Sailors learn how to control the sail and the tiller effectively while alone in an “Optimist”. A wide range of skills is taught at this level to suit the varying abilities. Practice for a few years at this level may be required before children are advanced enough to enter our Opti Advanced program.
  • Opti Advanced includes more technical sailing skills and may introduce aspects of racing. The advanced sailing skills are taught in higher wind conditions and strong intermediate sailing skills are required. Successful completion of Opti Intermediate or a strong demonstration of skills is required for entry into this level.
  • Spring Optimist training sessions will be available through late May and June for Optimist sailors who would like to take part in additional training sessions. Sessions run for 2 hours at a time, twice a week. Sailors must have completed Opti Intermediate as a minimum, all applications will be reviewed prior to being accepted to ensure all sailors are at the required skill level. Please check back for spring session dates and registration information.

General Information

Our Mission: The Kingston Yacht Club Junior Sailing Program exists to teach and promote water safety, the sport of sailing, and encourage skill development in a safe environment for young people in the Kingston community. The program emphasizes the enjoyment and lifetime benefit of active participation in sport.

The goal of junior sailing is to have fun while improving sailing skills!

  1. Hours are from 9:00 to 4:00 Monday to Friday. Please be on time. If you are going to be absent, phone us 547-2620 or bring a note the day before.
  2. You must have a lifejacket on at all times, while in a boat or on the dock.
  3. Shoes must be worn at all times! Sandal (e.g. Tevas, Flops, Reefs) are fine for land but closed-toe shoes must be worn while sailing to protect your toes.
  4. Leave the dock only after your instructor says it is okay to do so.
  5. Take care in the use of all equipment and boats. Long hours have been spent getting them ready for summer. If damage does occur report it to an instructor so it can be fixed.
  6. Don't run on the docks. It is too easy to trip on lines or slip on the wet surface
  7. The Club House is out of bounds during camp hours unless with an instructor.
  8. Swimming is only allowed as a group with your instructor.
  9. Lunch takes place in the park every day.
    • Bring a Lunch.
    • Do not leave the park without your instructors' knowledge.
    • After you eat lunch place the garbage in the trash can.
    • Don't pollute the park for others.
  10. Treat other campers with the same respect that you would expect to be treated.
  11. Language and behaviors that are unacceptable at home are unacceptable here. Swearing, bullying and throwing anything that is not a ball will not be tolerated.
  12. Instructor are God like creatures put on this earth t share their knowledge with you, and need to be treated as such

What to Bring

  1. Life Jacket, must be approved by the Canadian Coast Guard or the Department of Transportation.
  2. Proper Clothing, sailors should bring a swimsuit, a hat, splash jacket & lots of warm and extra clothing.
  3. Waterproof Sunscreen, the sun is stronger than ever while on the water, sunscreen should be applied at least twice a day.
  4. Sunglasses, we recommend sunglasses that filter UV rays.
