Any questions please ask our Bar Staff or Management.
| KYC - Kinston’s only Waterfront (underwater) Patio
So, you may have heard the news... Lake Ontario’s water level is a bit high right now. Not to speak lightly of the subject, for our thoughts and prayers do extend to any member and or club(s) on the Lake who have been impacted by this. We (at the moment) have been extremely fortunate and have not had the negative outcome many others have had to suddenly deal with. We are still on High Alert, and ask for boat owners to stop in whenever you have a moment to check up on your vessel (lines etc). During the past two weeks we have had an enormous amount of activity going on with launch, cradle breakdown, and installation of our new docks (which are wrapping up as I am writing this message for the knotmetre). We would encourage our membership to come down, stop in, support the Club and see all the great things that have been happening! Our current patio is completely underwater at the moment (so bring your rubber boots to go out on the centre dock), and instead of spending an enormous amount of money to make it operational, we have come up with some great and unique ideas to create a temporary outdoor eating experience I am sure all will be thrilled with! The process will begin next week and with the warmer weather coming, I am sure everyone will be pleasantly surprised with our new waterfront patio concept. Once again, we encourage everyone to come down, bring a friend (encourage them to join), enjoy the weather, and the fantastic Club environment!

Bodacious Blueberry Blonde Ale
Packing an awesome - gnarly - radical punch is this latest creation from Broadhead called Bodacious Blueberry Blonde Ale. When you take a sip of this one, you'll be reminded that summer is about to be here! Watch out - there's a wallop of Blueberry flavour and aroma in a clear golden blonde ale. This beer has been brewed with fresh - picked local blueberries from Canaan Blueberres which is located just outside Ottawa!
| Wine of the Month
I have been saving this launch for our Boat Launch! I am a HUGE FAN of a good Chianti, and I know this one will not disappoint! For when you say “Italian wine” and you say Chianti.
It is the most commonly consumed wine in Italy, and interestingly, the most commonly consumed Italian wine in the world, Chianti is emblematic of what Italy means to the world of wine. Chianti is a red wine that comes from Tuscany, but can contain small amounts of white grapes during blending. This is not the case with Chianti Classico, which must be solely made from red Sangiovese grapes (fresh cherry, strawberries, and red plum pleasure the senses when enjoying this wine). Winemakers have spent the last couple of decades trying to change the old image of Chianti: Wine bottles in wicker basket, interestingly also called fiascoes. They've done so by producing very nice wines through state of the art growing and fermentation techniques..
Chanit is not considered to age well, and loses steam quickly. Find the youngest bottle you can to get the most out of its vibrance. This wine is versatile and its high acidity allows it to be eaten with a wide range of foods. Enjoy Chianti best with fast food, pizza, red pasta, and salami sandwiches.
The Chianti I have chosen is Castiglioni Chianti, which is a deep ruby red with purplish highlights. Notes of small red-berry fruits like mulberry and currant insinuate themselves on the nose, while the ripe plum is perfectly in tune with fragrant violet and geranium. The palate is smooth, warm and elegantly balanced. A long, harmonious finish, good persistency, with a lightly spicy aftertaste.
Full-flavored dishes such as meat-sauced pappardelle, and roast chicken as well, sautéed beef with vegetables, and medium-aged cheeses. A perfect pairing with this weekend’s dinner special! “Bulgogi Flank steak with house made Kim Chi”
I hope you enjoy! Let the staff (or me) know what you think!

We are excited to have a team of knowledgeable, experienced coaches this summer - over the next couple of weeks, we will be highlighting them in the Knotmeter.
Opti LTR Coach: Julia Manarin (left)
Julia grew up sailing in Etobicoke. She spent a summer racing Opti, and did a few more summers of recreational Learn to Sail before racing Radial for two years. Since her first year at Queen’s, she has been involved with the sailing team and has gained experience racing 420s as both a skipper and a crew. Julia hopes to continue to be a part of the team as she begins teachers college in the fall. She has been at Ashbridge’s Bay in Toronto for the past three years coaching both Lasers and Optis, and is excited for a great summer at KYC.
Opti Race Coach: Mitch Banford (center)
Mitch Banford is the returning opti race coach from last summer. Mitch is keen to see our race team grow. A graduate for the Firefighter program at St. Lawrence College, he brings extensive knowledge of first aid and safety to the coaching team. Over 10 years as a single-handed sailor and competitor, Mitch brings his own experiences to the team. Some of the boats Mitch has sailed include: Lasers, 420s, 29ers and Sharks. This will be his third summer coaching at KYC.
420 Race & LTR Coach: Naomi Flanagan (right)
Naomi has been a carded athlete on the Ontario Sailing team since 2013. She was the Female 29er Canadian National Champion in 2015. She also placed top 5 at the 2015 Orangebowl regatta and was the top female at the 29er US Nationals in 2014. Naomi was also the top female at the 2014 Canadian Youth Nationals and placed top 3 at the 49er FX North Americans in 2016. She has primarily coached private lessons and clinics over the last couple of years. We are looking forward to having her coach the 420 LTR and Race Team this summer.

Sailing
| Racing Starts!
Club racing will start this coming Tuesday May 16, after a longer than expected hiatus. James Rountree, our new KYC Sailing Manager, will be working with our volunteer Race Committee crews to run the races. If you get a chance, please welcome James to the club. The Orange Peel is returning (from Wolfe Island) with a much needed electrical re-fit . Please dress accordingly for upcoming weather & cold water and be careful out there (i.e. safety first!). Finally, given the very high water conditions & recent flooding, rubber boots are needed to dryly get to some of our boats...
Reminders:
* Some crews haven't signed up for their Race Committee duties. These be automatically assigned in early June.
* People looking for a boat to crew on should sign up on the white board before evening races.
* There are still a few Sailors' Handbooks available.
| Able Sail Volunteers
Able Sail is seeking additional volunteer board members. The board members collectively run the program and maintain the fleet, but at this time we especially need people with some fundraising skills.
Don’t want to make a full commitment to the board? We also welcome volunteers to help out with boat maintenance/repair, companion sailing, and event planning – on a one-time or continuing basis. The Able Sail program is very fun and rewarding, and we would love to have your participation.
| KYC SAILORS' HANDBOOKS
The "2017 Sailors' Handbook" was introduced at the recent Sailors' Evening and printed copies distributed. The handbook includes details on Racing (events and Sailing Instructions), Cruising, Women In Wind, and Radio Controlled sailing programs at KYC. Additional copies of the handbook are available at the office/bar.
| RACE COMMITTEE DUTY
The Race Committee duties for all of May and most of June were assigned at the Sailors' Meeting. Each racing boat has a yearly obligation to perform 2 race committee duties on evening races and/or weekend events between May and September. Current assignments can be viewed online at "Sailing / Racing / Race Committee Duty" on KYC web site. Send email to race@kingstonyachtclub.com to request/modify an assignment.
| NEW RULES
A limited number of copies of the new "2017-2020 Racing Rules of Sailing" handbook are available at the office/bar for $22. They can also be purchased online at Sail Canada's web site.
