The Open 60 sailboat O Canada and her all Canadian crew, led by world-renowned sailor Richard Clarke, reunite to race in the Transpacific sailing race from Long Beach, California to Honolulu, Hawaii. The Transpac covers approximately 2225 nautical miles and is famous for fast downwind sailing under spinnaker in the trade winds.

Financial Planning Survey & Town Hall Meeting

Town Hall Meeting on March 26th at 7pm.At this meeting we will provide an update on the status of the
Harbour Project, further discuss long term financial requirements necessary to maintain our facility, and how the club might
be able to accomplish these requirements.You have already received an e-mail letter from me, providing additional details of the issues that will be discussed.
A short online survey is now available here, and I encourage all members to spend a few minutes to fill it in and let us know what you think. I look forward to seeing you at the meeting.

Family Day

Come down to KYC for an afternoon of family fun on Saturday, March 22nd. There will be ice skating from 3-4pm with warm drinks and snacks in the Clubhouse afterwards. After skating, we will feature a family movie on the projector screen in the outer bar area. (In the event of bad weather we will have a staff member running crafts and games inside before the movie.)
The kitchen will be preparing family-sized plates of spaghetti and meatballs. You can order individually, or each family portion gets a large plate of spaghetti to serve, a half loaf of garlic bread and unlimited visits to the salad bar!
This is the perfect opportunity to bring guests and family members, and socialize with other adults, while your children have fun and meet new friends. The whole family is welcome!There is no need to RSVP, however we ask that you contact the office if you think you will be attending in order to help us plan better.

KYC Scotch Night
Saturday, March 29Kingston Yacht Club is pleased to announce KYC Scotch Night on Saturday March 29. Scotch Night will feature a three course dinner, paired with three to four different single malts. Local scotch expert Sylvain Bouffard will lead the tasting along with KYC’s own Conrad Falkson and Doug Perkins.

Ice Rink
The rain and freeze has made our ice surfaces perfect for a famliy skate or a game of pick-up hockey! We do our best to keep the surface clear but are always looking for help. There is a shovel in the main entrance of the club available to clear the surface. Thanks go out to those that have pitched in already!
Remember: Members coming down to skate get 15% off their food purchase during restaurant hours!
Sailors' Meetings
Thanks to everyone who came out to our Sailors' Winter Meeting last Thursday.The Sailors' Spring Meeting will be held upstairs on Tuesday April 15, starting at 7 pm. The Sailors' Handbook for 2014 will be presented and discussed at that time.

Volunteers Needed - Leisure Show
March 22, 2014
We are looking for volunteers to help run the KYC booth at the City of Kingston Leisure Show. We will be promoting the Junior Sailing, Adult Learn to Sail, Community Club, and Membership Programs. Volunteers will be representing KYC, and chatting to potential members and/or potential sailing school participants.
The event will run all day on Saturday March 22. Setup will happen in the afternoon of Friday March 21. Volunteers Required.

Launch is Coming

Launch day is a mere, six weeks away,
With masts to follow, six weeks plus a dayyy..
All ye take note!
Calling upon able bodied sailors of all ages and stripes.
You braun and brains are required
for BOTH launch and masts up days.
We would like some "youngblood"to step up please,
as we will be "down" a few vets.
Please let the office know if you will volunteer for these fun events.We will hold a launch breakfast as well as some stew for lunch for the volunteers. Launch is April 26th - Masts April 27th. Many hands make light work!

KYC Race Coach wins Sail Canada Coach of the Year
Congratulations to KYC's Head Race Coach Rob Frost who has been selected as the 2013 "Coach of the Year". This is a great honour for Rob and KYC to get this national recognition.

Speaker's Series - Tristan Story
We are delighted to welcome Tristan Story back to KYC for another series. Tristan has kindly agreed to present to us about
"Rig Tuning" on Thursday April 3rd and
"Sail Trimming" on Thursday April 10th.
Both talks start at 7PM.
Women in Wind & KPSS Learning Events
In keeping with our mandate to enhance sailing skills, Women in Wind, in collaboration with the Canada Power Squadron, is once again sponsoring two learning events for KYC members this Winter.
SAIL: March 12, 26, April 2, 19, 23, 30, 2014 from 7:00 - 9:30 - Partridge Room. This Sailing Course is for new and experienced sailors who want to increase their sailing knowledge and skills. It covers the practical and theoretical basics of sailing and sailing seamanship. The range of topics is broad: from a description of different sailboat rigs, sail plans, hull types, and rigging to stability, balance, and the physics of sailing; from sailing at different points of sail to handling heavy weather and storm conditions; from spinnaker handling to reefing; from leaving the dock to mooring and anchoring. It also covers sailing safety, navigation rules, and sailing tactics. Cost: $150.00. Volunteers Needed for Summer Regattas
The regatta will take place July 21- 24 In preparation for this here is a list of courses and seminars that we are planning:
KYC in cooperation with CORK, will be hosting the 29' er North American Championships just prior to the 29'er World Championships that will take place this summer .
- First Aid with CPR
- VHF Radio Operator with license
- Race Officer course
- Sail Wave Race Scoring seminar
- On water Safety course with Skiff specific module June 14/15

We also need volunteers for a Shark Regatta being held July 5th-6th.
