Cruising

Fleet Co-Captains – Jim Cannon,
Sue Baker
Definitions:
Cruise: To sail or travel about, as for pleasure or reconnaissance.
Informal: To move leisurely about an area in hope of discovering
something
In 2008, the Cruising calendar is structured around four
types of events:
1. A series of Monday evening sails
2. A series of Sunday day sails
3. Four weekend rendezvous
4. An extended cruise
All KYC members, whether boat owners or not, are welcome
to participate in cruising events. One purpose of cruising
events is to help boaters meet boaters. The Monday evening
and Sunday sails offer opportunities to achieve this goal.
A Cruising Crew Bank is being created (see www.kyccrewbank.com)
to help Skippers and No Boaters connect and go afloat.
All weekend rendezvous destinations are accessible by road
as well as by water. In past seasons, participants have been
innovative in using a variety of combinations of land and
water travel to attend events.
The extended cruise scheduled for mid-July will visit a series
of anchorages and marinas to the east.
Cruisers are also reminded about the Fort Frontenac Cruising
Cup (FFCC). To meet the requirements for an award, cruisers
must sail to a set of places in Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence
River. The FFCC Log, which can be picked up at the KYC bar,
lists the requirements which need to be completed to earn
an award.
Information updates and reminders about cruising events are
distributed by e-mail as the season progresses. If you are
not currently receiving cruising fleet notices and would like
to, please send your e-mail address to cannonj@queensu.ca.
Information about events is also posted on the Cruising Notice
Board in the Old Board Room (west end of the main floor behind
the fireplace) throughout the season.
Please reply to e-mail notices or use the sign-up sheet on
the Cruisers Notice Board if you plan to attend an event so
that the host for the event will know how many to expect.

Guard (with Cape Hearn and a rescue helicopter), Kingston
Fire and Rescue (with a fire truck and fire boat), HMCS Cataraqui

June 2nd Monday Evening Sail
The first of a series of weekly sails Mondays at 5:30 throughout
June, July and August.
June 8th Sunday Cruise
The first of a series of day sails to various local destinations.
Events are also scheduled for June 29, July 20, August 10,
August 24, September 7 and September 14 (See calendar above).
June 14th – Sailpast and BBQ
(Day Event)
Make a point to join the fleet for Sailpast and consider inviting
non-boat owners aboard for an afternoon on the water. The
entertainment and BBQ after Sailpast provide a great opportunity
to mingle with KYC members.
June 20 – TGIF at Trident Yacht
Club
The Trident weekend begins on Friday evening at 5:30 with
a TGIF hosted by Trident. TYC is a 20 minute drive east of
the LaSalle Causeway. Look for the sign marking the Trident
driveway on the right hand side of the road.
June 21th– 22th – Trident
Yacht Club Rendezvous
The first weekend rendezvous of the season is to Trident Yacht
Club. Enjoy a more lengthy cruise around the east end of Howe
Island and back east along the Bateaux Channel or sail directly
to TYC via the eastern entrance to the Bateaux Channel. Saturday
will feature a pre-dinner reception (bring your own drinks,
nibbles provided) and bring your own BBQ dinner. (BBQ’s
are available on site.) Remember to sign up on the Cruising
Notice Board so we can tell Trident how many to expect.
July 5th -16th - EYC Escape Cruise East
This 10 day cruise will explore anchorages and marinas east
along the St. Lawrence. Stops will include a lobster fest
with entertainment, two plays, a barbeque in the islands,
a visit to the Frederic Remington Museum (Ogdensburg), and
a tour of historic Singer Castle.
July 18th and 19th Main Duck Race
One option to meet the requirements of the Fort Frontenac
Cruising Cup is to complete an overnight passage. The Main
Duck Race offers an opportunity to meet this challenge under
conditions monitored by KYC. See the Schedule of Racing Events
for details.
KYC Cruising Fleet Sunday Sail Sunday
July 20
Judith and Robert Mackenzie invite the Cruising Fleet Sunday
Sail on July 20 to their place on Amherst Island. The plan is
to raft at their mooring or anchor nearby the mooring and to
have lunch ashore before heading back to KYC in the late afternoon.
If you have a dinghy it would be useful.
Skippers meeting at 10:00 with departure at 10:15. Channel
71 will be monitored after 10:15.
Sign-up sheets are posted on the Cruisers Bulletin Board
in the Sunshine Lounge at KYC.
No Boaters who would like to spend the day on the water are
invited sign the sheet. Boat assignments will be made at the
Skippers meeting.
For additional information please contact Judith or Robert
Mackenzie at mackenziejr@sympatico.ca
or 613 548-8332.
How To Get There by Boat or by Car
The Mackenzie's place is on the north shore of Amherst Island
located on the North Channel west of The Brothers Islands
and east of Preston Cove which is located just east of Griffin
Point. See chart below.
With reference to the chart proceed west past The Brothers
Islands to the point marked "X" on the chart. You
can pass between the centre and westerly Brother Islands.
When proceeding to Point "X" stay off the Amherst
Island shore by keeping the entire Lennox power plant (not
just the two stacks) in sight. The sight line is shown on
the chart. Scattered boulders are located in the water inside
the Lennox power plant sight line towards Amherst Island .
Point "X" lies just west of County Road 6 as extended
southward across the North Channel. The location of Point
"X" is at the intersection of the Lennox power plant
sight line and a range located in front of the Mackenzie's
house which is yellow with a brown steel roof. The range is
marked with two red triangles. Binoculars are required to
see the two red triangles from point "X". The steel
chimney on the roof of the house also lines up with the range
formed by the two red triangles.
Proceed in towards the shore on the range. There is generally
8' of water on the range but it is essential to keep dead
on the range and not to wander off by more than 10 feet to
avoid a few scattered large boulders. Keep watch and proceed
slowly. Caper which draws 5' 8" will be on the mooring
ready to receive your raft. There is 10' of water at the mooring.
Monitor Channel 71 as you approach.
By Car
For those who come by vehicle the Amherst Island ferry departs
from Millhaven on the half hour. Departures from the Island
are on the hour. $8 return for a vehicle. People free. On
arrival on the island proceed straight ahead to the fourway
stop intersection and turn left onto Front Road. Proceed through
the hamlet of Stella and go for a distance of about 4 km.
The Mackenzie's are at 1150 Front Road.
Good luck! We look forward to seeing you.

July 26th and 27th – Partridge
Bowl with an Overnight and Sunday Brunch
The “race” from KYC to Jemmett’s Landing is
one of the most popular events of the sailing season. At the
end of the day enjoy a BBQ and evening bonfire. The next morning
Sunday Brunch is served on the property before heading home.
Hope to see you there.
Aug 14th – 17th – Picton
Jazz Festival Cruise
August 14 - 17 are the dates for the Prince Edward County
Jazz Festival and preliminary plans have been made for interested
cruisers to head west and take in some of the Picton events
on Friday and/or Saturday nights (August 15th and 16th). Dockage
is tentatively reserved at Picton Port (municipal) Marina
and Tip of the Bay Marina (as needed). Apparently our PEYC
connection will not take advance reservations. Dockage fees
are approximately $1.30 per foot per night and anyone interested
in a spot for one or both nights (Fri/Sat) should sign up
on the cruisers' board or get in touch with John and Karen
Kitney as soon as possible at kitneyj@kingston.net.
Information about the Festival is available at www.pecjazz.org
and although the entire program covers venues across the county
there is enough going on in Picton itself to make this a great
weekend outing. The big ticket performances take place at
the Regent Theatre on Main Street. Friday Night's Robi Botos
Trio ("Tribute to Oscar Peterson") is already sold
out but we have snagged basically the last 10 tickets for
KYC cruisers for Saturday Night, featuring Jackie Richardson
and "Tenor Madness".
Frances (KYC office hours, 613-548-3052) will assign these
tickets at a cost of $35 each to those who are the first to
call. Anyone else who is really keen should contact the Regent
Theatre Box Office at 613-476-8416 ext. 28 to get on a waiting
list for Saturday night. Check additional notes on Jackie
Richardson's performance, below, in this message.
Jazz Festival flyers will be available at the KYC Bar and
Office, as well as near the cruisers' board, so please check
all the extra events. Currah's Lounge/Restaurant in Picton
will feature Frank Wright and the Gary Benson Duo on both
Friday and Saturday nights. Please make your own reservations
if you are interested (613-476-6374, cover charges may apply).
Currah's is also advertising an "After Hours Jam"
with the John Sherwood Trio on both nights. Rita di Ghent
and Friends will be featured at Rita's Parlour on Saturday
from 10:30 to 1:00 am (tickets from Books & Co. at 613-476-3037).
Most of the fun as a Cruising Fleet is about travelling and
celebrating these events together so please sign up (or email
John and Karen) and use our pre-arranged dockage (name, vessel,
length, draft and nights). A couple of boats may head down
on Thursday to overnight at Prinyer's Cove and complete the
trip on Friday. Dry land trekkers are also welcome to join
the group and some of you may also be interested in the Sunday
program (still about 100 tickets left for Jim Galloway's Wee
Big Band at the Regent). Please make your own arrangements.
Remember that you must call Frances at the club to secure
any of the last remaining Saturday tickets for Jackie Richardson.
The Saturday show, August 16th, at the Regent Theatre will
showcase the talents of the Canadian jazz diva, whose vocal
skills have garnered much attention in jazz circles across
North America. Jackie Richardson has performed with artists
such as the late Ray Charles, Anne Murray, Dr. John and Celine
Dion. In addition to her musical expertise, Jackie is an incredible
performer, who, for more than 35 years, has been heavily involved
in Canada’s jazz, blues and theatre scenes, having completed
a multitude of work on stage, screen and in th e studio.
Her recording A Woman’s View…Through Child Eyes,
is a fabulous compilation which highlights her extraordinarily
diverse musical
